Diagnosing autistic adolescents who use compensatory strategies requires a great deal of experience and expertise. In the clinical setting, internal diagnostic tools have been developed to better recognise the various aspects of autistic perception and cognition.
One of these tasks consists of sorting pictures of people with different facial expressions based on the emotions depicted. When used correctly, the sorting process and the result gives us an insight into how emotions are recognised and categorised in young people. However, the task can be time-consuming and the result difficult to interpret. A digital version was therefore developed, which we would like to evaluate and standardise in a study.
