Current Projects

1. Perception of humour in autism

As part of the SNSF starting grant (led by Prof. Mirella Manfredi), in this project, we examine which features of humorous information influence the understanding and appreciation of humour in adolescents on the autism spectrum. In particular, our research clarifies whether AS adolescents comprehend and appreciate different types of verbal and visual humour. In addition, we investigate whether AS adolescents understand and appreciate humorous information describing situations that are more familiar to AS adolescents than non-familiar ones. To test these aspects, we employ the Electroencephalogram and the Facial Action Coding System (FACS).

2. Cognitive strategies in humour processing

In this Project, we analyse the cognitive strategies underpinning humour processing in AS adolescents and neurotypicals. In particular, we attempt to answer the following questions: Does preference for a certain type of information processing strategy (local vs global) influence humour processing in AS adolescents? Why do AS individuals understand and appreciate a certain kind of humour? Do mentalising skills influence humour processing in these individuals?
To answer this question, we analyse electrophysiological correlates and behavioural responses of AS adolescents and neurotypicals.

3. Humour training program

This Project aims to develop and implement an innovative humour training program aimed at boosting the humour of AS adolescents and, as a result, their overall level of subjective well-being. In this project, no strategies or techniques for understanding humorous information are taught, but rather a tailor-made humour training program is created for each AS participant. Behavioural and neurocognitive responses are analysed and compared before, during and after training.
