LEAPS: Zurich Learning Progress Assessment

Class with children

Focus acquisition of written language competence & multilingualism

The Zurich Learning Progress Study (LEAPS) is an investigation of the learning and educational progress of pupils in the Canton of Zurich. Led by Prof Martin Tomasik and Prof Elisabeth Moser-Opitz, the LEAPS consortium has been commissioned by the Department of Education of the Canton of Zurich. The focus is on developing subject-specific and interdisciplinary competencies.

To this end, we will follow around 2,000 children throughout their compulsory schooling. The knowledge gained from the project will be used to further develop the education system in the Canton of Zurich. Our research team is studying the longitudinal development of children's written language skills as part of the LEAPS consortium. We are interested in how this development depends on individual and social characteristics such as different language experiences and multilingualism.
